Certified quality
Master gear design and production processes are all carried out using special Star SU software and modern manufacturing methods. All Star SU checking and setting masters are fully tested on CNC inspection equipment and are delivered with a certificate of conformity. We produce master gears on specially designed and optimized machinery in classes from 2 to 6 to DIN 3962, AGMA and BS standards.

Consulting and analysis optimization
Our experienced engineering team can answer questions on profile analysis and design. Existing profiles can be optimized using our internally developed master gear design software.

Regrinding and recoating
Master gears wear with use and must be reground to ensure quality performance. Star SU provides regrinding and recoating services as well.

Marking
All Star SU checking and setting master gears are engraved according to DIN 3970, or with any requested customer-specific data, and bear an individual tracking number, enabling them to be carefully monitored throughout the whole production process.

Packaging
Our precsion tools are shipped and transported in a specifically developed packaging system. Drawings, documents and checking protocols are safely stored away in a separate pocket integrated into the tool box lid.

The single flute gundrill, with its ability to machine very straight deep holes and hold excellent finishes, was originally developed for gun barrel manufacturing. Today, this tool is a general-purpose drill designed for deep hole drilling in virtually any material.

The single flute gundrill, with its ability to machine very straight deep holes and hold excellent finishes, was originally developed for gun barrel manufacturing. Today, this tool is a general-purpose drill designed for deep hole drilling in virtually any material.

The gundrill requires high-pressure coolant through the tool, keeping the cutting edges lubricated and allowing for adequate chip evacuation down the flute channel.  Star SU’s Single flute gundrill product line diameter range is .078” [1.98mm] through 1.500” [38.10mm] as a solid carbide head.

Larger diameter tools are available using a brazed inserted blade design. All gundrills can be made to any specific length. Lengths over 72” [1828 mm] will have an additional weld joint in the body of the tool.

The gundrill is designed to drill holes from the solid, obtain bottom hole configurations, and assist in burr free intersections. The gundrill can achieve precision holes in one pass thus eliminating the need for secondary passes, and is a tool for consistent hole-to-hole reproduction.

This tool is unique in its limitations, for machining deep holes are limited to the flute length not the depth of the cut. The design of the single-lip, straight deep “V” flutes and high coolant pressure allows for fast, consistent penetration without the need for pecking.

Due to the point not being on center, the tool requires either a bushing or a pilot hole. Once into the cut, the tool is self-piloting. The additional advantages of a single flute gundrill:

  • Straightness tolerance of .001” [0.03mm] per inch  
  • Finish hole diameters as good as +/- .0005” [0.013mm]

Star offers three different styles of coolant hole configurations:

  • Kidney Shaped Hole (KDS) – This style is recommended for cutting diameters under .375" [9,53mm]. Extruded shapes assist in achieving larger gallons per minute out of the front of the tool, thus allowing for better chip evacuation. This coolant hole configuration also can assist when lubricity is minimal.
     
  • Single hole (GDS) - This style is used when the environment is in best conditions. This means that application has adequate pressures.
     
  • Dual Hole Configuration (TCH) – This coolant hole design is recommended for cutting diameters .376" [9,54mm] and greater. This design allows for higher flows assisting in better chip evacuation.

Star SU has a wide range of contours/wear pads that gives the tool the burnishing effect needed to obtain the finish and hole size while controlling heat/friction for a given material. These features are strategically engineered per application down the outer diameter for the length of the carbide.

Point angles and clearances play an instrumental part in the equation. The proper selection and reproduction of geometry is crucial to its total overall performance. These angles and clearances can be modified to change the cutting performance results and also assist in modifying the high-pressure coolant for better chip flushing or reducing the heat of the cutting edges.

Every material has its own machinability characteristics. With five decades of design and cutting too experience, Star SU’s  gundrill engineering center allows designing the tool to custom fit each application.

Single Flute GundrillsStar Single Flute Gundrills are a general-purpose tool used in most drilling applications to obtain hole sizes within .001”, run-out requirements of .001” per inch and straightness of .001” per foot. This tool has a single flute 3-piece construction design and has the deepest flute channel, thus enabling maximum chip evacuation. Diameters are available from .0781 - 1.5.”

 

Single Flute Multi Step GundrillsStar Multi Step Gundrills are used to produce holes concentric to one another. They are available in many diameters and step lengths, with a variety of forms on the steps and are capable of cutting a variety of materials. Gundrill Characteristics Point LocationPOINT LOCATION
The point location balances the cutting forces. For most applications this dimension is 25% of the diameter, or Ø/4. If the point location is greater than Ø/4 (closer to C/L) the tool will cut tighter. Conversely, when the point location is less than Ø/4 (closer to the OD) the tool will cut more freely.

Gundrill Characteristics Outside AngleOUTSIDE ANGLE
The outside angle will vary based on the material being machined and process conditions. It is controlled by our manufacturing tolerance of ± 1°. A larger outside angle measure will assist in maintaining straightness, but the tool will cut tighter (greater heat generation). A smaller outside angle allows the tool cut more freely, but straightness is sacrificed.

The inside angle is used to balance the cutting forces. A larger inside angle will reduce thrust and increase coolant flow. A smaller inside angle will push the drill towards center causing a tighter hole. As with the outside angle our manufacturing tolerance is ± 1°.

Gundrill Characteristics Slash/Roll ClearanceSLASH/ROLL CLEARANCE
The purpose of the Slash/Roll clearance is two-fold. The first function is to control the coolant flow up the flute channel thereby providing sufficient chip evacuation. The second function is to provide adequate support necessary to counter the forces acting on the cutting edges. The measure of this angle and its rotation relative to the cutting face will vary based on material, application, and operating parameters.

Gundrill Characteristics Outside Angle ClearanceOUTSIDE ANGLE CLEARANCE
The Outside angle clearance on tools greater than Ø4.00 mm is primarily cam relief. For tools less than Ø4.00 mm facet relief is employed (5-facet grind). The type of relief chosen can also vary based on the end users regrind capabilities.

The inside angle clearance is almost exclusively straight clearance. Its angle measure is usually the same as that of the outside angle clearance. By strictly controlling all of the above features we obtain consistency from grind to grind and insure repeatability of size, straightness, and surface finish in the machined part.

Solid carbide gundrills have a two-piece construction design. The tip and body are a single piece of carbide brazed into the driver/shank and the flute is ground down the length of the head and body.

Solid carbide gundrills have a two-piece construction design. The tip and body are a single piece of carbide brazed into the driver/shank and the flute is ground down the length of the head and body. The absence of the braze joint at the head/body transition eliminates the possibility of coolant obstructions while adding significant strength to the tool. The design of this product will help improve the T.I.R. between the head and body.

Solid carbide gundrills are available from diameter ranges of .055" [1.40mm] to .200 [5.08mm] and greater with lengths up to 11.25” [286mm]. The greatest benefit of this type of tool is its rigidity. When a tool enters the material, as well as while it’s drilling, it’s exposed to torque forces, or wind-up. This has a detrimental effect on the carbide, resulting in premature wear.

The solid carbide gundrill strength resists the wind-up forces. Another advantage of two-piece solid carbide gundrill versus the traditional three-piece construction gundrill is the ability to run at much higher feed rates. Many applications yield to high surface footage with conventional style gundrills.

The strength of the solid carbide gundrill can allow penetrating at 100% to 150% higher feed rates running at conventional RPM’s. See below for a table of standard solid carbide gundrill size ranges.

Often referred to as the “milled style,” the two-flute two-hole gundrill differs from the double crimp by the rigidity of its body. This tool is engineered with a solid steel body, milled flutes, and coolant holes produced internally to allow for optimum coolant flow to the tip. The results yield a limited external chip channel and an incredibly ridged tool. Application dictated, this tool is applied in operations that require maximum penetration rates. Like its counterpart, the double crimp gundrill, geometries, clearances and backtaper are critical to its success. The most common materials drilled are cast iron and some aluminum applications. Two-flute two-hole gundrills are available in diameters from .250" - 1.0" with lengths to 48.”

Star SU’s two-flute two-hole gundrill is used for high penetration like the Double-Crimp. This tool has a milled flute design and allows maximum rigidity. It is applied where length to diameter ratios dictate a more rigid tool due to the lack of whip guides. This also has a limited flute channel and can only be applied on applications where the chips are smaller in size. Diameters are available from .2500" - 1.000". Lengths are available up to 48."

The most critical interface, in which the carbide is subjected to the most traumas, is during entry and exit of the part. This is caused by the lack of lubricity to the cutting edges. The double jet was designed to combat this type of condition with its unique placement of the coolant holes supplying adequate amounts of coolant to the cutting edge while entering and exiting the part.

Star SU’s double jet product line diameter range is .200" [5.08 mm] through 1.500" [38.1mm]. The overall lengths can be made to any specific length. Lengths over 72" [1828mm] will have an additional weld joint in the body of the tool. An additional advantage to this style gundrill is its ability to break through intersecting holes and/or enter irregular surfaces without premature wear. The unique coolant hole location also assists in kick off burrs that can occur during break through. As with all gundrills straightness, concentricity, size and finishes are obtained.

Star SU Double Jet Gundrill A unique Star Cutter design used on interrupted cut applications when coolant is lost during breakout or intersecting holes. This tool allows coolant to be directed on the cutting edge, thus lubricating the corner of the tool and reducing the rubbing forces. Diameters are available from .2000" - 1.5."

The term double crimp is derived from the process of crimping the same tube used for the single flute gundrill, only crimping it twice, 180 degrees apart. Therefore, with the flute channels on this type of tool being somewhat shallower then the single flute, they limit the type of materials to be drilled by the chip size generated.

The term double crimp is derived from the process of crimping the same tube used for the single flute gundrill, only crimping it twice, 180 degrees apart. Therefore, with the flute channels on this type of tool being somewhat shallower then the single flute, they limit the type of materials to be drilled by the chip size generated. The most common materials drilled are cast iron and cast aluminum. The double crimp has advantages. First, the coolant holes in the gundrill body are formed by the crimping action; therefore, minimizing the coolant turbulence at the head/body transition.

Second, the flutes being equally swaged 180 degrees apart allow for much greater rigidity. The double crimp gundrill can obtain feed rates twice that of its single flute partner. This is obtained by two cutting edges opposed to one another, and geometry angles ground to precise dimensions. With the combinations of geometry, clearances and backtaper, the chip load is reduced by 50% and higher penetration rates are obtained, making the double crimp gundrill the tool of choice.

Double crimp gundrills are available in diameters from .1875" - .5625" with lengths to 72".

Star SU double crimp gundrill can be used for high penetration in softer materials. Cast iron and aluminum are typical materials where the use of two cutting edges allows twice the penetration rate of the single flute design. Diameters available from .1875" - .5625". When machining fluid power cavities, there are several characteristics that are very critical to the performance of the hydraulic port. The most important characteristics for the cavities are controlling bore size, roundness and the finishes for these machined diameters to prevent leakage. Each of the diameters or forms machined for a given cavity on your part that are not generated correctly can damage the seals or O-rings, and also can result with the failure of the manifold/valve body.

The most accurate way to produce the cavity is by using either one or two passes with a solid carbide tool. Our latest engineered designs have replaced traditional sub-landed tools and hold extremely tight tolerances. The number of tools used to machine the cavity is determined by the diameter sizes and depths of cut. Our Engineering Department determines tooling needs at the time of the proposal.

Star SU valve guide reamers utilize pressurized coolant to force chips ahead of the tool to produce ultra-smooth, ultraprecise holes. They produce holes to tolerance of 0.0005" (0.13 mm) and less in steel, cast iron, compacted graphite iron, nodular iron, aluminum, bronze and exotic materials.

Star SU valve guide reamers utilize pressurized coolant to force chips ahead of the tool to produce ultra-smooth, ultraprecise holes. They produce holes to tolerance of 0.0005" (0.13 mm) and less in steel, cast iron, compacted graphite iron, nodular iron, aluminum, bronze and exotic materials.

Ideally adapted to the sizing and enlarging of previously drilled or cored holes, Star SU valve guide reamers provide higher penetration rates and closer size tolerance. 

Star SU valve guide reamer diameters start at .1875" (4.76 mm). Cutting feeds and speeds are recommended based on the design of the product and the part requirements.

Star SU reamers are made in both multiple flute and multi-diameter types. They can have solid carbide heads brazed to a tubular steel body in sizes up to 2.0" diameter and with brazed inserts in 2.0" to 4.0" diameter ranges.

H.B. Carbide manufactures several types of round rod in numerous sizes and multiple grades:

Round Rod – Round Rod is available in numerous sizes and grades. Blanks can be provided in diameters up to 6.00” OD. Diameters up to RR-40 (0.645” OD) are extruded and stocked in standard 12.2” lengths but can also be cut to your specific lengths. Lengths greater than 12.2” are available upon request.

Single Hole Rod – made to order and available in many sizes and grades.

Two-Hole Rod – available in numerous sizes and and grades. We currently maintain stock in grade HB-110. The standard length is 12.2” long, but can be provided in longer lengths or can be cut to your specific length.

Ground Round Rod – made to order and available in all grades.

Helical Hole Rod – HB grades not available. Arno Friedrich’s carbide is available in numerous diameters, 2 or 3 coolant hole geometries and in 30 degree and 40 degree helix.
