April 6, 2009 Single Index Milling, or gashing as it is popularly called, of large, long face width, coarse pitch gears has long been a method for removing metal quickly for large ring gears, both internal and external. The increasing use of indexable carbide cutting tools has made metal removal rates high; and the method of gashing has been useful and practical as a prefinishing operation for subsequent finishing operations such as full form milling (in the soft state) and grinding (in the hard state).
The gashing method is used to produce teeth in ball mill gearing, gears used in mining and crushing, wind energy ring gears, and mill gearing. As a roughing operation on modern equipment the method is accurate enough to produce some designs of finished wind turbine pitch and yaw gearing without subsequent finishing operations (DIN 8-12 quality levels).
For Star SU's Samputensili machine group gashing, or single index milling, is commonly done on combination hobbing/milling machines. The machines can be purchased with the internal and external milling heads and with hobheads for hobbing with indexable carbide or HSS hobs or milling with indexable carbide or HHS cutters. These heads are easily exchanged depending on the work at hand.
Since metal removal rates are extremely high in terms of cubic inches of metal removed per minute Samputensili designed special chip removal systems to evacuate the chips quickly from the cutting area.
The fully CNC controlled Samputensili S2300 (2.4 meter capacity) hobber/milling machine has been delivered worldwide (United States, Germany, China, Russia) recently for the growing wind energy gear box market, producing large gears required in the wind turbines by both hobbing and milling.
The S2300 can mill module 28 external gears and module 18-20 internal gears...read more.
